Sailing ProgramSailing Program OverviewSLSC offers a sailing program for children and adults, designed to teach and improve sailing skills in a safe and fun environment. For children, it represents our commitment to teach the next generation of sailors this wonderful lifelong sport, as well as the values of cooperation, responsibility and sportsmanship. For adults, our goal is to increase their enjoyment and participation in the sport, or introduce them to it if sailing is new to them. The SLSC Sailing Program is designed for families from both the club membership and the general public.
Program Outline
Our program consists of three types of sessions, outlined below, for Beginner juniors, Advanced juniors and Adults. SLSC boats may be used when available. Students are encouraged to provide their own boat if of an appropriate type, although this is not required. Instructor leaders are US Sailing certified. All students will be expected to conform to water safety and medical guidelines, as outlined in the application. Since sailing is a sport influenced by the weather, and safety is our key concern, the program may also include shore-based activities when necessary, which will be fun and educational. Program Outline: BeginnersFor Beginners, aged between 9 and 12, our goal is “Learn to sail.” We'll use Flying Scots to begin the week, then our club Sunfish,Opti's or Lasers. The hours will be 9 AM to 1 PM each day. The program will be run for 10 days over 2 weeks (Monday through Friday each week.) The objective will be to learn to sail (including the basics of sailing, boat handling, and water safety) and to have fun.
Program Outline: AdvancedFor Advanced sailors, aged between 13-17, our goal is “Sail for fun and Sail to race.” We'll use Scots, as well as Lasers. The hours will be 9-4 pm each day. The program will be run for 10 days over two weeks (Monday through Friday each week.) The objective will be to improve sailing and racing skills of students. Students new to sailing will be paired with more experienced sailors.
Program Outline: AdultFor Adult sailors, we have two classes available to fit your level of sailing. Class sizes will be limited to promote a focused learning environment. Take one class or two, as your proficiency improves. We'll use Flying Scots. The hours will be 5 - 8:30 pm. Each class will run for 5 evenings. The objective of the adult program is to help adults sail and race better. Adult Level 1 is “Learn to Sail”. Designed for those new to sailing or with little experience, this class will teach basics of sailing, boat handling, crewing, and water safety. Adult Level 2 is “Intermediate Sailing and Sail to Race”. Designed for those who have done some sailing before, the class will help students improve their technique, as skippers and crew, including more advanced boat handling and racing: starts, mark rounding, and tactics.
